Kosa silk, a variant of Tussar silk, is derived from the Indian silkworm Antheraea mylitta. These silkworms create their cocoons on specific tree types, including arjun, saja, and sal. Kosa silk is renowned for its durability and distinctive texture.
Notably, two locations, Korba and Champa in Chhattisgarh, are recognized for their production of high-quality Kosa silk. The variety originating from Champa stands out for its exceptional quality and global export.
Creating a single metre of Kosa Silk involves a meticulous process, further complicated by the rarity of the Kosa worm. Consequently, the raw silk yarn is often blended with materials like cotton or polyester. Crafting a basic Kosa saree can span three to five days, encompassing the steps from yarn extraction to weaving, the duration varying according to the workforce involved.
