Puanchei, also referred to as the Mizo shawl, holds a significant role within Mizo culture and is donned by women during special occasions such as weddings, festivals, and ceremonies. Recognized with a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, the weaving process of puanchei demands skill and patience. The shawl is traditionally crafted from cotton, although synthetic yarns have started to be used as well. The cotton yarn is enriched with vibrant colours using natural dyes sourced from plants, fruits, and flowers. Puanchei is traditionally woven on a loin loom, with weavers intricately integrating designs and motifs during the weaving procedure.
Puanchei stands out for its elaborate and colourful patterns, drawing inspiration from nature, folklore, and tribal symbols. It often showcases intricate depictions of flowers, animals, birds, and geometric figures, with these designs often carrying profound meanings for the Mizo community.
In Mizo culture, Puanchei possesses a special significance, symbolising identity and status. This cherished shawl is regarded as a valuable heritage piece, handed down through generations as a family legacy. Additionally, it is gifted as a gesture of respect and honour to guests and dignitaries.
Beyond its cultural importance, puanchei has found its place in the fashion industry. Numerous designers have incorporated this traditional Mizo shawl into their collections, blending ethnic charm and elegance into contemporary attire. Puanchei has now become widely accessible in the market, both within Mizoram and other regions of the country.
However, the commercialization of puanchei has sparked concerns regarding authenticity and ethical production. Instances of imitation and mass production have diminished the value and craftsmanship of this traditional handwoven art. It is crucial to lend support to local artisans and weavers who remain dedicated to preserving the authenticity of puanchei, ensuring its continued tradition and genuine quality.
